Wisdoms and Self
You Know More Than You Think You Know
You know more than you think you know. I promise.
My very first job out of college was in the ETRM industry, and if you’ve never heard of it, that’s because it adds very little value to the everyday person’s life. In summary, it’s a tech sector that specializes in saving oil and gas companies a lot of money, and very little money of that is passed on to you. That’s all you need to know.
Anyway, fast forward 14 years of perfecting my craft as a business analyst in this industry and I have never been more depressed in my life. Because it’s a very “niche” space, most people in this space never leave. They just cycle between different companies. Just imagine swimming day in and day out in different lanes inside the same pool. That was the life I thought I was condemned to because I thought it was all I knew.
Until certain events drove me to finally put my resume out there in January of 2022. Not only did I quickly receive an offer, but four offers from employers in completely different industries.
That was when I realized that my skills weren’t tied to that one software or industry. My most valuable skills (communication, problem solving, analysis…) can be taken anywhere. The only person stopping myself from escaping my situation… was me.
