Wisdoms and Self

We Are Successful When Our Students No Longer Need Us

I've been through 14 review cycles in my professional career now, and while the praise from leadership hasn't slowed down, I find that my enthusiasm derived from receiving the praise has diminished over time.  In economics, we call this the point of diminishing returns.  Once you're full, each additional bite of food brings you less joy.

However, what has brought me tons of joy and fulfillment lately is when a junior person I've mentored say "I learned so much from you."  My source of joy has shifted from self-serving to serving others.

I supposed it's because I come from a long bloodline of teachers and healers.  My dad once said that "As a teacher, I am successful when my students no longer need me."  And I feel that.  No matter what capitalism and hustle culture tell us, the nature of a true teacher will never change.  We are successful when our students no longer need us.
