A new gardener asked me: “What can I do to stop my brassicas from bolting?”

My answer is: “Why would you want that, my beautiful squash blossom? ”

For one, you cannot stop your plants from bolting. It is the natural cycle of life itself. It is when your plants reach the end of their production cycle, and thus, technically the beginning of their death. But don’t be sad, for more magical things are getting ready to happen.

Flowers will bloom. Bees will rejoice. Seeds will commence. And next season, the cycle starts again. The beginning of death is only to prepare for new life. Appreciate death just as much as we celebrate life, for there is no life without death. Embrace the inevitable ebbs and flows of life, because you cannot stop them.
