Why Squashes are Important to Vietnamese
One of my favorite Vietnamese proverbs, and one of the first ones we learn in grade school, is “Bầu ơi thương lấy bí cùng, tuy rằng khác giống nhưng chung một giàn”.
I will attempt to badly translate this into English: “O’ squash, please love gourds too. Though different species, we share the same trellis.”
Basically the message is to be altruistic even towards those who have different origins than you. I’ve made a recipe video before where I spoke about the importance of squashes and gourds in Vietnamese cuisine. Squashes and gourds are integral in our proverbs, folklores, poetry, and even food, because they are so generous not only in their production of fruits, but also in their exemplary lessons and wisdoms.
