Ocean Vuong, "Time is a Mother"

A Razor Sharpened with Silence

What sets an author apart from the rest of the pack for me is their ability to express the entire world in just a few words. That’s one of the key principles that Vietnamese writers of the past adhered to (and what I strive towards): how to convey as much as possible, while using as few words as possible. They were not impressed with superfluous wordiness.

Note the author's clever use of contrasts between duos of incompatible entities:

“Three years away” - time as physical distance

“Sharpened with silence” - tangible action described with intangible noun

Ocean Vương is definitely making all the classic Vietnamese poets proud, and this is why he’s one of the few modern writers that I revere.
